We’re still vibinn to the “Hallucinations” EP by the amazing Zah Boh dropped this past month. Today, we’re diving into the creative world of Rich Szabo, uncovering his production process and background. I first stumbled upon Zah Boh’s music over three years ago with his tracks “Static” and “Wet,” and I was instantly hooked by his deep bass lines and those unique, weird sounds incorporated. After three years of being homies, we’re super excited to finally collaborate and drop this EP together. Check out the interview below, and don’t forget to give the homie a follow!
Where are you from and how did you get into Electronic Music?
I started to get into EDM when I was 13 with good ole Skrillex and DJ Bl3nd and all the popular EDM songs from that period. From there on I was fascinated with the sounds they were using especially with the dubstep genre and I wanted to make my music with similar sounds/style. When I was 18 my homie helped me get a cracked version of Logic Pro X on my Macbook and I started self-teaching myself music production and watched so many Virtual Riot producer tips and tricks on YouTube. I made my first few songs in Logic and then my sister got me some turntables with an Ableton live trial and I fell in love with Ableton over Logic and now to this day i use Ableton Suite 11 for all my music production.
Were there any challenges you encountered during the production of this EP?
One of the challenges I had was just trying to have a good balance of low and high-end frequencies so the whole song was nice and full. Also, making sure the songs were like a story and had a good flow from start to finish.
Can you describe your typical workflow when crafting electronic music
Oh man, my workflow is pretty crazy I have sooooo many songs that I start and never finish, but i typically always start with the drums and groove of the track and I fill all the gaps with ear-candy goodness and then work on sound design and add transitioning effects and listen to the same song over and over until I feel like it’s done. I usually stream my sessions in Discord with the homies and they help me with ideas and their thoughts on the track which is key to getting other people’s feedback so you can make the best track possible.
Did you incorporate any external hardware during the production process of this EP?
My setup is super simple. Just my headphones and my pc and that’s pretty much all I use to make music. I don’t have any fancy machines or whatnot.
Were there any synths or effects that were crucial in defining the sound of this EP?
I don’t spend money on synths I use all stock ableton plugins and sounds and splice for all the filler sounds and foley.
What advice would you give newcomers just starting their production journey?
My advice is to make music that YOU actually want to hear and not just because its hot right now or trending. I have soooo much fun making shit I would like to hear at a club or festival and those songs turn into my most popular. Also, just have fun with it and mess around with all the knobs and functions of whatever DAW you are using. Get to know your DAW inside and out and music production will come very easily. Practice Practice Practice, your first few songs are not going to be the best, but with determination and practice you will slowly start to get the ideas in your head transfered over to your DAW with ease.
How do you envision your sound evolving in your future releases?
I am trying to stick to a few synths/sounds in ableton to help get my sound more polished and noticeable and I will always have foley in every song I make. It makes the tune alot more creative and you can come up with some crazy shit and i’m all about ear candy swag. I also don’t stick to one genre. I will literally make whatever I feel like making which keeps me fresh and constantly coming up with new ideas.
Are there any up-and-coming artists that you’re excited about right now
YESSSS so many artists rn are killing it, Huge shoutout to yojas and sumthin sumthin they are some big inspirations for me. .less is a homie of mine i’m sure will blow up soon. Same with Subherb.
Your EP takes us through a journey of a variety of different genres such dubstep, bass music, and trap among other elements. Do you have a favorite genre to produce, and what inspired you to start experimenting with such a diverse range of styles?
My favorite genre to produce is experimental bass or trap. I love some trippy ass wubs and sounds over a dank beat that gets me going. I also loveeee riddim and dubstep, just high-energy shit. I’m constantly inspired by my taste in music. I have a great range of music genres and I just want to try and make whatever ideas in my head come to life.
Any upcoming projects or releases you’re working on?
YESS I have so many unrealesed bangers I’m waiting to drop from house music to experimental to dubstep and even lofi haha. Im just a perfectionst and will never be fully sastisfied with my songs but i just gota say fuck it and drop them when i finish it. i also want to get my collab game up as well.
Thanks for your time Richy!
