We are very excited about our next talented Spotlight artist: Quidd. Hailing from Minneapolis, MN, Quidd aka Corey Neilson is a multi-faceted artist who produces all things bass music and has releases on great labels such as Scāpegōt Records and KJ Sawka’s Impossible Records. The first track I came across by Quidd was his Killing in the Name Of Remix which is an absolute monster of a midtempo dubstep track. Quidd takes the classic RATM song and flips it into a banger for the ages. Proving he can be trusted with remixing such classics, Quidd moved onto another classic Breathe by Prodigy. This remix is a bass-heavy slapper, also incorporating dubstep elements reminiscent of fellow heavyweight producer Peekaboo. Keeping his tracks unpredictable with multiple switch-ups, growling bass, and pounding drums and snares you never know what you will hear next. His newest track Handle It with labelmate Audigy just released yesterday and is a freeform bass journey that takes heavy to a whole new level with insane sound design. From dubstep, to trap and full-on bass music, I am positive we will be hearing a lot more from Quidd very soon. Check out our interview with Corey below and be sure to give the man a follow!
Where are you from, and how did your musical journey begin?
I am originally from Minnesota. I have lived all over the place but always come back to good old Minnesota. Music has always struck a chord with me, especially the drums. I was banging on pots and pans through my early childhood until my parents finally bought me a real drum kit at the age of 8. From then on, I dabbled with a few other instruments, but nothing stuck like the drums did for me. My first electronic show was when I was a kid, we didn’t have these massive shows or festivals. We had RAVES… in abandoned warehouses. When I was 15 years old we used to sneak out of the house and take my moms car down to Minneapolis and party in these warehouses until 4-5AM, and then get the car back into the garage (quietly) before she had to be to work in the morning. (Mom if you’re reading this… just kidding) Ahhhh the good old days! My earliest musical inspiration consisted mainly of 80’s metal hair band drummers! Tommy Lee at the top of that list of course. Overall, I’d say most of my early musical inspiration came from Pink Floyd and classic reggae.
Are you a big fan of other genres like rock? Do you draw influence from them and are you catching that RATM reunion tour?
Oh yeah!! I’ve been a huge fan of both since they first hit the scene! I am a big fan of rock and metal. From Slayer and Pantera to Primus and NIN, I definitely gather inspiration from everywhere. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to see them when they come through. Beyond heartbroken. Touchy subject. I need a moment *Sniffle*
If you could be stuck in an era of music, what would it be?
Ok, I’m back! Sorry about that! To be honest, I would absolutely love to live through the 1940’s swing scene, through the fifties doo-wop, into the sixties Beatle mania all the way up until disco hit the scene around the early ’70s and then I’m out. I can’t stand disco or country.
What DAW do you use to produce, any favorite VST’s/tools you use for sound creation?
I have been on Ableton since day one. My “go to” VSTs are basically Serum and Phase Plant, and then I use a handful of others for processing. One thing I can’t live without is my OTT and Phat Rack.
How do you take a break from producing when needed? What do you like to do in your free time?
I try and keep a healthy balance of work, family, and friends. In all honesty, if I have any free time I’ll spend it writing music. Now in the summer, I’ll be a little more ambitious. I love to camp, ride bikes, golf, day drink and yell at the neighborhood kids for cutting across the lawn. For the most part, I live in my studio.
What producers do you think are pushing the boundaries at the moment/inspire you the most?
Peekaboo, Um.., Bassnectar, LSDream, WB x MB, Getter (always), OK. Kevin, Allen Mock, Shlump, Duke & Jones, Eliminate, Quix
Any fellow upcoming producers we should know about?
I think my buddy, OK. Kevin is about to pop! He is mad talented and such a good dude. Keep an eye on him. Bunch of my Minneapolis homies are killing it too! Audigy, Wylin, Lucy Luxe, Daku, Sleepless Dragon, Illuminary, MVNIV, WolfPvck, Syncbutton, Louie Pearson, Rico Act, The High Caliber Crew. Also, check out Scāpegōt Records roster. Lots of upcoming artists who are killing it right now!!
Cheers! Thanks for your time Quidd. Looking forward to what’s in store next!
Thank you so much for having me on!
